US Courts Order Oil Pipeline Shutdown
July 7, 2020
by Magnum Photographers
On July 6th, 2020, US courts ruled that the controversial Dakota Access Pipeline must cease operation and be subjected to a thorough environmental review. This is a victory for members of the Standing Rock Sioux Tribe who have been fighting for years against this oil pipeline, concerned that its construction would ruin sacred lands and contaminate local water supplies. In 2017, 210,000 gallons of oil did leak out of the pipeline and caused massive environmental damage.
Magnum photographers had documented opposition to the creation of the pipeline in 2016 and 2017, most notably Larry Towell who's made four trips to the region.
