From photographing presidents Barack Obama & Donald Trump to his intimate documentation of his wife and children, Magnum photographer Christopher Anderson is one of the most accomplished contemporary portrait photographers. In this discussion, Curator of Photographs at the National Portrait Gallery, Sabina Jaskot-Gill joins Christopher Anderson to explore what makes a compelling photographic portrait.

Christopher Anderson was born in Canada and grew up in west Texas. He first gained recognition for his pictures in 1999 when he boarded a handmade, wooden boat with Haitian refugees trying to sail to America. The boat, named the Believe In God, sank in the Caribbean. In 2000 the images from that journey would receive the Robert Capa Gold Medal. Anderson is a member of Magnum Photos and is the author of four monographs of photography.

Sabina Jaskot-Gill is Associate Curator of Photographs at the National Portrait Gallery, London. Previously, she lectured on the history and theory of photography at Sotheby’s Institute of Art, London. She recently completed a PhD on post-war art photography, jointly supervised by the University of Essex and Tate.
